چکیده

Dr. Ailton Melo – Av. Magalhães Neto 735/802 41820-020 Salvador BA Brasil. E-mail: [email protected] Movement disorders secondary to virus encephalitis is an uncommom feature and is mainly observed after the acute or subacute stage of Japanese encephalitis. This condition, described in Asian countries, is characterized by pleomorphic neurologic signs and poor outcome as 30% of patients die and around half of the survivors have severe neurological sequelae. In Brazil, although some extra-piramidal syndromes such as chorea continues to be an endemic post-infectious disease, dystonia has seldom been related to central nervous system infection. In previous paper, our group showed that the neurological sequelae of post infectious meningoencephalitis are extremely pleomorphic, however no case of dystonia was described.

DOPA RESPONSIVE DYSTONIA: A CASE REPORT

Dopa responsive dystonia (DRD) is a dystonic syndrome of childhood, usually affecting gait and subsequently developing into parkinsonism with a dramatic therapeutic response to levodopa. At the best of our recollection this is the first case in Iranian medical literature of a 13 year old boy, affected by this interesting, rare and treatable disease which can be easily diagnosed if clinicia...

Long-term follow-up of levodopa responsiveness in generalized dystonia.

OBJECTIVES To assign an accurate diagnosis to patients with dystonia based on the presence of sustained levodopa responsiveness and to determine whether motor fluctuations occur in patients with dystonia who are withheld from levodopa. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with generalized dystonia who responded to treatment in the 1970s with levodopa/carbidopa were surveyed by phone and then examine...

Dopa-responsive Dystonia in Children.

Treatment of dopa-responsive dystonia is one of the more satisfying experiences in clinical neurology. The response to treatment with levodopa is usually dramatic and complete with no long-term complications. Carbidopa/levodopa is the mainstay in treating dopa-responsive dystonia. There is some experience using anticholinergic agents, but they are more likely to cause side effects and do not tr...

Dystonia.

Therapy for most people with dystonia is symptomatic, directed at lessening the intensity of the dystonic contractions. For a small minority of patients (eg, those with dopa-responsive dystonia, Wilson's disease, or psychogenic dystonia), specific therapy directed at one of the many causes of dystonia is available. Before initiating treatment, clinicians need to decide if a patient has a form o...
